Lee Grief has led a successful career in politics, been the CEO of a major chain of women’s clothing stores, and owner and manager for several well-performing businesses. Even with all this going on, he has made it a major part of his life to engage in volunteer work for many charities, businesses, and not-for-profit organizations.
One of the largest organizations that he has volunteered for was Menorah Medical Center. Menorah Medical Center was a large, 430-bed hospital located in the Kansas City area. He has been with the organization for a total of 17 years, two of which he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors. During this important period for the organization, he spent too many hours to count acting as chairman for a number of key internal working committees. These committees that he volunteered to be on included patient quality care and medical staff appointments. The year in which he was elected as Chairman of the Board was 1992. In the previous years, the company had not been fairing well; in fact, it had been losing a great deal of money. Specifically, the company had lost about $10 million in the previous 10 years.
Lee Grief developed a plan to sell Menorah Medical Center. Two companies that fought the most ferociously were Columbia and Midwest. The highest bidder in the end was Midwest Medical Center, a huge 13 hospital chain, and they received the hospital. They did decide to close down the hospital soon after they acquired it however. In order for there to still be a Jewish hospital in the Kansas City area, they would go on to build a smaller, 200-bed hospital in Overland Park.
Greif had the Menorah Medical Center sold for approximately $52 million. The proceeds from the sale were $29 million which Greif used to create the Jewish Heritage Foundation. The Jewish Heritage Foundation is a non-profit charity that helps fund local grants and charities. With the creation of the Jewish Heritage Foundation, Lee Grief was elected to become the Chairman of the Board. After he stepped down from this position due to his countless other obligations both to businesses and charities, he remained a member of the board. For an example of all the honorable things the foundation has been involved in, last year alone it gave grants to over 100 local charities. Greif is highly appreciated for saving the hospital from the dire situation that it was facing because of its unfavorable location and the amount of money it was losing.
